Turlough Butler O' Bryen was born in 1853 - the year in which L.L. Langstroth first published a description of his movable-frame hive.
In 1893 the Congested Districts Board appointed Turlough O' Bryen to develop bee-keeping. When he died in 1928 most of the bee kept in Ireland were already in movable-frame hives. During much of his adult life he was the leader in this revolutionary bee-keeping development throughout the island.
